![]() ![]() So, in other words, the reason our protagonists are thrown into this purgatory spirit world just due to the fact that they messed up a friendship ritual that somebody looked up online incorrectly.Īnd again, it’s executed well enough that it answers my questions in a satisfying manner without having to resort to excessive reading between the lines. This world can only be accessed if people incoorectly perform a friendship ritual. However, the school stills exists in sick purgatory within the spirit world that is haunted by the murder victems. Since then the school was shut down and destroyed. This of course ends with the principal killing a bunch of students at the school, and thus getting the school to shut down, but not before killing himself. This is because the daughter wants the spirits of people to keep her mom company. That daughter – however – eventually became a vengeful spirit who haunts and mentally totures the principal to go around murdering the classmates of the school that he works at. There is this principle who – in a fit of abusive rage – murdered his wife and his daughter. The best that I can say about the story is that I’m able to successfully follow along and understand everything. ![]() Like I said, it’s not particularly deep but it executes it really well. The second thing I really liked about Corpse Party was the story. Again this is simply another example of many anime trying to be multiple things at the same time but failing utterly to be cohesive. So a lot of the time you’re just confused as to why that show goes back and forth on two very contradictory things about trying to bridge the gap. Now it would be great if that show actually balanced these things and give us a logical reason for why these characters have such a bipolar personality. At one moment it’s simply a spice of life with cute little girls doing cute things but then the next moment it’s just a bunch of cute girls wearing creepy smiles as they go about stabbing the main character for no good reason. T he problem with When They Cry is that it largely fails to stick true to itself. For this example, I will be using an anime called When They Cry, which follows a bunch of students trying to avoid this demon, except it takes place in a small village instead of a school. So let’s cross this with an example of an anime that doesn’t do this very well, and highlights a lot of the problems I’m talking about but ultimately is very similar to Corpse Party. My point is that Corpse Party remains fun and enjoyable because it sticks true to what it is, instead of trying to be way deeper than it should be. It doesn’t try to be pretentious or have a deeper meaning that just comes off as ham-fisted or contrived within the context of a narrative. ![]() It does this by setting up a very scary atmosphere such that audiences can quickly get invested in the drama. This is because it sets out to be essentially a B-movie horror flick in anime form, and it succeeds very well. And fortunately, I don’t think the Corpse Party has this problem. However, what I hate is that so many other stories do this so poorly, becuase it ends up doing it in such a way that it conflicts with trying to do it instead of enhancing the storytelling. In fact, I would say Attack of the Clones is one of my favorite movies because it successfully blends so many different genres at once. Now I like it when stories do this successfully. One big issue with a lot of anime find is that it tries to be a million different things at the same time, and it unsuccessfully tries to blend different genres together. ![]() Now, the biggest reason why I enjoy the show so much is that it simply knows what it wants to be. The simple purpose is to appease all of the spirits that are trapped inside the school and escape. Essentially it follows a bunch of high school protagonists that find themselves trapped inside an abandoned elementary school and have to avoid these vengeful spirits that’s trying to kill them. This anime is based on a hit video game that came out in the early 2000s. Fortunately, I would say the best exception to this rule is a little anime called Corpse Party. And not every anime show that I’ve seen has all three of these problems but I would say that these reasons are a huge barrier for me. This is because although I have enjoyed a great deal of the various titles, I sadly have not enjoyed the vast majority of it simply due to its over-reliance on bad CGI in conjunction with lackluster writing, its inability to stand on its own outside of out of place fanservice. Anime has been a bit of a mixed genre for me. ![]()
